MotoGP in a statement on Monday stated that Liberty Media would acquire “approximately 86%” stake from Spain-based owners Dorna in a deal valued at 4.2bn euros ($4.5bn).

The completion of the acquisition is anticipated by the conclusion of 2024, contingent upon clearances and approvals by competition and foreign investment law authorities in various jurisdictions.

While Liberty will not be the pioneer in owning both Formula One and MotoGP, it follows in the footsteps of private equity firm CVC Capital Partners, which previously held ownership of both racing series.

However, CVC Capital Partners was compelled to divest the motorcycle series to acquire Formula One after facing objections from EU competition regulators.

In a statement released by MotoGP, it was announced that Liberty Media Corporation has agreed to acquire MotoGP, the pinnacle of two wheels. Liberty Media will obtain approximately 86% of Dorna, with Dorna management retaining around 14% of their equity in the business. The transaction reflects an enterprise value for Dorna/MotoGP of €4.2 billion and an equity value of €3.5 billion.

Although other companies, including Qatar Sports Investments and TKO Group Holdings, were reportedly interested in acquiring Dorna, it was Liberty Media who ultimately secured the deal.

“We are thrilled to expand our portfolio of leading live sports and entertainment assets with the acquisition of MotoGP,” said Greg Maffei, Liberty Media President and CEO. He emphasized MotoGP’s global appeal, loyal fan base, and financial strength.

Carmelo Ezpeleta, the long-serving CEO of Dorna, expressed excitement about the acquisition, stating that it represents the next step in the evolution of MotoGP. He praised MotoGP’s growth potential and highlighted Liberty’s track record in developing sports assets.

Since Liberty acquired Formula One in 2017, the sport has experienced increased popularity and financial success. Maffei hinted at Formula One’s rising value, indicating that it is now worth significantly more than the eight billion dollars paid for it in 2017.
