Five police officers in Kenya appeared in court on Wednesday, charged with aiding a suspected serial killer and 12 others in their escape from a Nairobi police station, according to court documents.

In a bid to allow more time for evidence collection, prosecutors requested the court to detain the policemen involved in Tuesday’s escape for two weeks.

They plan to gather statements, review CCTV footage, and examine the officers’ phones.

One of the escapees was Collins Jumaisi, who was arrested last month for allegedly killing at least six women whose bodies were discovered wrapped in plastic bags at an abandoned quarry turned dumpsite.

Jumaisi allegedly confessed to killing 42 women, including his wife, though his lawyer claims the confession was extracted under torture, which prosecutors deny.

Police believe insiders assisted the escape and have launched a manhunt to capture the fugitives.

A police report disclosed that Jumaisi and 12 Eritrean nationals were found missing from their cell around 5 a.m. on Tuesday, with proof indicating they escaped by cutting through a wire mesh over the window.
