There was chaos and tension on Sunday as fire razed the private residence of the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr Mariya Mahmoud.

According to reports, the fire outbreak started at the residence located in the highbrow area of Asokoro in Abuja in the afternoon.

Though no official statement has been released on the incident, the media aide to the minister, Mr. Austine Elemue, who confirmed the incident, said the cause of the fire outbreak was being investigated.

Findings from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) fire service suggest that items affected include all the upper floor’s household contents, including walls, roof, AC, beds, clothes, documents, credentials, jewelry, etc.

The cause of the fire is suspected to be an electrical fault inside the children’s room.

Reacting to the fire incident, Abiola Adebayo, the acting director of the FCT Fire Service, stated that the first floor of the building was completely razed by the fire.

Adebayo said, “On reaching there, we saw that the first floor, the upper floor was completely engulfed in fire. So, what we could do is just to prevent the fire from spreading to the ground floor and the adjacent structures. No lives lost.”
