Former Barcelona footballer, Dani Alves, is to be released from jail pending an appeal against his rape conviction in exchange for posting bail of one million euros ($1.08 million).

This is according to a Barcelona court on Wednesday, March 20, 2024,

Dani Alves, a former Brazilian international, was convicted of sexual assault in February and sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison, of which he had already served over a year.

The court granted him “provisional release” in exchange for a bail payment of 1,000,000 euros. Additionally, he was required to surrender his Spanish and Brazilian passports, remain in Spain, and present himself to court every week.

Following an appeal by his lawyer, Ines Guardiola, after a hearing on Tuesday, the 40-year-old has been released pending a final resolution in the appeal.

However, Alves must still surrender both his Spanish and Brazilian passports and remain in Spain, with weekly court check-ins.

Moreover, he is subject to a restraining order preventing him from going within 1,000 meters of his victim, her home, her workplace, or any other place she frequents.

All parties involved, including the defense, the victim’s legal team, and the prosecution, have three days to appeal Wednesday’s ruling.
