Poland’s president has inaugurated Donald Tusk as the new pro-European Union prime minister, bringing an end to eight years of right-wing populist rule.
The conservative head of state, aligned with the previous Law and Justice (PiS) party government on Wednesday, successively swore in the ministers of the new administration.
Tusk, who previously served as prime minister from 2007 to 2014, has committed to restoring Poland’s standing in the European Union following rule-of-law issues that strained relations between Warsaw and Brussels.
The former European Council president has emphasized that assisting war-torn Ukraine will be a priority for his government. Tusk’s cabinet includes Radoslaw Sikorski as foreign minister, a role he held in the past, and former ombudsman Adam Bodnar as justice minister.
Although the PiS secured the most seats in October’s general election, it failed to form viable coalitions and gain support for its minority government on Monday.
Tusk’s Civic Coalition, which came second in the election, allied with two smaller pro-EU opposition groups, the Third Way and Left, garnering enough votes to remove the PiS from power.
The new government is expected to encounter daily challenges from PiS lawmakers as the party retains allies in the presidency, central bank, supreme court, and several key judicial and financial state institutions. Polish President Andrzej Duda, with a term ending in 2025, may use blocking tactics to veto legislation until then.
