The Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has been tasked on realistic measures that will prevent incessant incidents of building collapse across Nigeria.
This directive was given by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Housing, Mahmuda Mamman, when members of COREN paid him a courtesy in Abuja.
Mamman said that COREN had enormous powers to inspect and control the standard of buildings in Nigeria.
“There should be no more cases of building collapse, and this lousy situation be brought to a stop. I urge you to strategise and hatch out a plan to stop this menace of building collapse,” he said.
As a way out of the issue, the permanent secretary said that apart from thorough checks, COREN should ensure registrations and mandatory monitoring of construction activities.
According to Mamman, these measures would prevent incidents of building collapse no matter the weather, and also eliminate panic among Nigerians while living in well-constructed solid buildings.
He then challenged members of COREN to find a permanent solution to the worrying problem.
