Australia has decided to continue relying on natural gas while aiming for net zero emissions by 2050.

The country’s Resources Minister, Madeleine King, in a statement on Thursday, emphasised the importance of gas as an energy source, citing its necessity even beyond 2050.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese defended the strategy, asserting that gas power generation complements renewable energy initiatives.

However, environmental advocates argue that prioritising gas undermines efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources.

They argue that investing in gas extraction and exportation contradicts Australia’s climate goals and perpetuates reliance on fossil fuels.

Critics point out the environmental impact of gas, including its contribution to climate change through greenhouse gas emissions.

Despite the government’s stance, some experts question the necessity of further gas exploration and development, noting a decline in gas exploration expenditure as companies shift towards renewable energy investments.

Australia’s significant reliance on natural gas, both domestically and as a major export, underscores the economic and political complexities of transitioning to cleaner energy sources.

While the country has committed to reducing carbon emissions, its high per capita emissions highlight the challenges it faces in achieving its climate targets.
