Calls and data services have returned to normal in Nigeria and other countries as MainOne, a West African digital infrastructure service provider, announced the stabilization of network outages across the region.
The service provider, in a statement on Monday, said it worked with regional partners last week and over the weekend to reroute traffic with restoration capacity.
“We worked with regional partners late last week and over the weekend to reroute traffic with restoration capacity and our observations are that we have stability on our network across the region this morning,” MainOne said.
MainOne announced that the accomplishments made over the weekend mark a significant milestone in guaranteeing sustained connectivity for the West African business community.
However, the company acknowledged that there is an ongoing repair process and it is collaborating closely with its maintenance partners, vessel owners, and permitting authorities to accelerate the restoration of the subsea cable.
Despite the challenges, MainOne remains optimistic about completing the cable repair as scheduled and fully restoring services, ensuring the continued integrity of the submarine cable for operational efficiency.
On March 14, 2024, significant cuts to undersea submarine cables disrupted internet traffic in various parts of the continent, affecting subsea cable providers.
This disruption impacted the services of banks and telecommunications companies in Nigeria.
In response, MainOne stated, on March 15, that the repair process would span between one and two weeks.
Additionally, the company mentioned that an extra two to three weeks may be required for transit time, as a vessel is needed to retrieve spare submarine cables from Europe and transport them to West Africa.
MainOne stated that the network outage was caused by an external incident, resulting in a cut on its submarine cable system in the Atlantic Ocean offshore Cote d’Ivoire, along the West African coast.
