The Central Bank of South Sudan has issued a notice announcing the release of a new one thousand South Sudanese Pounds (SSP) note.
Signed by Central Bank governor James Alic Garang in a statement dated June 12, 2024, the decision is grounded on the 2012 Parliament Act.
The Bank of South Sudan has announced the issuance of the new banknote series valued at one thousand South Sudanese pounds (SSP1000).
According to a statement dated June 12, 2024, signed by Central Bank governor James Alic Garang, this action aligns with the provisions outlined in the Banking Act of 2012 and the amended Bank of South Sudan Act of 2023.
Governor Garang clarified that the newly issued banknotes possess the same core features as previously circulated SSP1000 banknotes.
He noted a modification in the terminology of the new series to “South Sudan pound” from “South Sudanese pound”.
All other aspects of the new banknote series remain unchanged. The bank has called upon all financial and non-financial institutions to adhere to the directive.
A banknote series comprises all denominations of a nation’s currency released over a specific period.
Typically, the introduction of a new series aligns with the integration of enhanced security measures.
As new banknotes are introduced, those from the previous series are gradually phased out of circulation.
