According to a local activists’ committee, at least 20 individuals were killed by Sudanese paramilitary forces in an assault on a village situated south of the capital Khartoum.

A village named Um Adam, located 150 kilometers (93 miles) south of a city, was attacked by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Saturday.

This information was stated in a press release by the local resistance committee, which is one of the pro-democracy groups that coordinate aid.

The ongoing war in Sudan between the military, led by army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF, commanded by his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, had started on April 15th last year.

According to United Nations experts, the war-ravaged Darfur region has seen many thousands of people killed, with up to 15,000 in a single town.

The conflict has led to the displacement of over 8.5 million individuals, devastating Sudan’s already fragile infrastructure and bringing the nation perilously close to famine.

As per the statement, Saturday’s assault left “over 200 wounded, with a mix of serious and minor injuries, and claimed the lives of more than 20 individuals, although not all casualties could be accounted for.”

A medical source at the Manaqil hospital, situated 80 kilometers away, confirmed to AFP that they had “received 200 wounded, some of whom arrived too late.”

“We’re facing a shortage of blood and we don’t have enough medical personnel,” he emphasised.

According to the United Nations, more than 70% of Sudan’s health facilities are not functioning. The remaining facilities are overcrowded and have limited resources.

Both sides involved in the conflict have been accused of committing war crimes, such as targeting civilians, shelling residential areas, looting, and obstructing aid.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which took over Al-Jazira state in December, have attacked entire villages, including Um Adam.

According to findings from the UK-based Centre for Information Resilience, by March, at least 108 villages and settlements across the country had been set on fire and “partially or completely destroyed”.
