Echikunwoke, who was born in Ohio and holds dual American-Nigerian citizenship, realised her Olympic dream by winning the silver medal in the women’s hammer throw at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She stood on the podium alongside gold medalist Camryn Rogers of Canada and bronze medalist Zhao Jie of China.
Echikunwoke’s path to the Olympics was not an easy one. She had originally planned to represent Nigeria, the country of her parents, at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. However, she was ruled ineligible to compete due to a clerical error by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) in complying with out-of-competition drug testing requirements.
“On my 25th birthday, I was officially informed that I cannot compete at the Tokyo Olympics due to the negligence of the federation I was set to compete for,” Echikunwoke said. “I can’t even begin to explain how heartbroken I am.”
With the possibility of representing Nigeria gone, Echikunwoke decided to pursue her Olympic dreams with the United States. She made her debut at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, finishing 12th in the final. A surprise winner of the 2024 US Olympic trials, Echikunwoke went on to break her own season’s best with a throw of 75.48m, securing the silver medal in Paris.
“I felt pretty secure coming into the competition. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime,” Echikunwoke said. “It’s really a vindication. I wanted the experience.”
While Echikunwoke celebrates her success, Nigeria is still waiting to get onto the medal table in Paris. Sprinter Favour Ofili was another Nigerian athlete who missed out on the Olympics due to the AFN’s oversight. Ofili finished 6th in the 200m final, visibly emotional after missing out on a podium finish.
The reaction in Nigeria has been bittersweet, with many congratulating Echikunwoke but also voicing criticism towards the country’s sporting authorities. A representative of Nigeria’s sports minister declined to comment on Echikunwoke’s success, stating that the focus was now on their own athletes.
Echikunwoke, who says she may celebrate her silver medal by indulging in some sour candy, has moved on from the disappointment of the past. “I’ve forgiven the past and we just move forward,” she said. Her historic achievement is a testament to her resilience and the support she found with the United States team.
