South Africa’s ANC Party has scheduled a disciplinary hearing for former President Jacob Zuma on Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

Zuma, a former ANC leader, faces charges of publicly endorsing the uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party in the recent general election and registering as a candidate for the MK Party, which has become the country’s third-largest party following the polls.

The hearing, originally postponed in May due to security concerns and the advice of the ANC National Disciplinary Committee (NDC) to defer until after the 2024 elections, will now proceed virtually. According to South African government media SABC, Zuma may be represented by any ANC member “in good standing” with the party.

In December 2023, Zuma announced he would not campaign for the ANC and would vote for a new party, citing an inability to deceive the South African people.

Zuma’s ANC membership was suspended in January 2024 amid internal party divisions. President Cyril Ramaphosa, re-elected after the May 29 elections, has since formed a government of national unity with other political parties after the ANC failed to secure a parliamentary majority.

Despite being barred from contesting just days before the election by the Constitutional Court, Zuma has stated that the MK Party will align with the opposition alliance in parliament.
