Unknown gunmen have again reportedly killed about five people during an attack on Kerang community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The gunmen were said to have defied a 24-hour curfew imposed on the community by the state government following a similar invasion on neighbouring communities by gunmen that claimed several lives.
A source and a resident of the community, Joseph Kabir, told newsmen on Tuesday that a couple killed in the recent invasion by the gunmen, were given mass burial on Tuesday.
Kabir said emphatically: “I can confirm to you that five people, including a man and his wife, were killed by the terrorists between 5.00 and 8.00 pm on June 26, 2023 in Sohon, Kerang community of Kerang District Mangu Local Government.
“The gunmen came to the community which is behind the SWAN Water Company Limited, located at Kerang community at 5.pm and started firing gunshots which led to the killing of the victims.
“We thought that with the declaration of curfew by the government, security agents would be able to stop the terrorists from killing innocent people.
“They escaped into the bush after carrying out their evil acts. It was this morning that the corpses of the victims were discovered by the residents, who have been thrown into mourning. The victims were given mass burial this morning, June 27, 2023.”
The spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, had not confirmed the incident as of press time.
