Ivory Coast’s ruling party has backed President Alassane Ouattara to pursue a fourth term in 2025, increasing the likelihood that the 82-year-old will run again.
Although Ouattara, who secured a controversial third term in 2020, has expressed a desire to step down, he also hinted that he would consider staying in politics if his longtime rivals did not retire as well.
Senior members of President Ouattara’s party, the Rally of Houphouëtists for Democracy and Peace (RHDP), passed a resolution on Monday, expressing their commitment to ensuring that Ouattara leads the RHDP to victory in the 2025 presidential election.
Ouattara ultimately ran for another term after the Constitutional Court approved his candidacy, though his opponents boycotted the election in protest.
He has maintained that the 2016 constitution reset his two-term limit, allowing him to run again in 2020, a claim disputed by opposition parties.
According to officials, clashes between rival supporters before and after the 2020 election led to the deaths of 85 people.
