French authorities have launched an investigation into the disappearance of two Congolese Paralympic athletes who recently competed in the Paris Games, as confirmed by the Bobigny prosecutor’s office on Thursday.
The investigation began on Sept. 7, after the athletes’ delegation reported their disappearance two days earlier.
According to Le Parisien, shot putter Mireille Nganga and visually impaired sprinter Emmanuel Grace Mouambako, along with a third individual, went missing on Sept. 5.
Their suitcases were missing, but their passports were left with the Congolese delegation, according to a source involved in the investigation who requested anonymity due to restrictions on speaking publicly.
The Paralympic Committee of the Democratic Republic of Congo did not respond to inquiries from The Associated Press.
Nganga, who did not register a mark in the seated javelin and shot put events, and Mouambako, served as Congo’s flag bearers during the opening ceremony of the Games, according to organisers.
