The memorandum of understanding was signed in Beijing during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, with Chinese President Xi Jinping observing the agreement alongside the Tanzanian and Zambian presidents, as reported by broadcaster CCTV.
Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted China’s commitment to using the summit to advance the Tanzania-Zambia railway project, improve rail-sea transport in East Africa, and position Tanzania as a model for high-quality China-Africa Belt and Road cooperation.
Earlier this year, the World Bank approved $270 million to enhance connectivity between Tanzania and Zambia and boost regional trade.
The Dar es Salaam corridor, a crucial route for copper exports from the Central African Copperbelt, is operated by the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA).
This route offers an alternative to South African logistics bottlenecks that have hampered copper and cobalt exports from Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
