Egypt is set to bid for hosting the 2036 and 2040 Summer Olympics, with the nation’s enhanced infrastructure and sports facilities central to its ambition for a successful African bid, declared the president of the African National Olympic Committees Association (ANOCA) on Sunday.

Africa has never hosted the Olympic Games, with Cairo’s last attempt being an unsuccessful bid for the 2008 Olympics.

Egypt, the most populous nation in the Arab world, has invested billions in constructing modern sports facilities and infrastructure as part of its ongoing efforts to modernize the country.

Among these developments is the Egypt International Olympic City in the new administrative capital, featuring a 93,900-seat national stadium and 21 other sports venues.

Mustapha Berraf, head of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), announced that Egypt plans to bid for the 2036 and 2040 Olympics.

Speaking at a press conference on the day of the Paris Olympics’ closing ceremony, he also mentioned that South Africa’s Cape Town might consider a bid for future Games, although the specific year was not disclosed.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) member and ANOCA head, Mustapha Berraf, expressed optimism that Africa could host the Olympic Games, likely in 2040.

He emphasized the importance of addressing infrastructure needs, including roads and airports, while highlighting Egypt’s significant potential.

As the 2028 Games are set for Los Angeles and Brisbane is preparing for 2032, Egypt is among several nations aiming to bid for the 2036 Olympics.

Other interested countries include Indonesia, India, Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. IOC President Thomas Bach noted that the interest for the 2036 Games has already attracted bids from numerous cities.
