Eight people have died after a landslide at a landfill in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, according to city authorities on Saturday.
The landslide occurred late Friday following heavy rainfall, which caused parts of the landfill to collapse and bury nearby houses, as reported by Ugandan media.
Authorities in Kampala stated that government and Red Cross teams were actively searching the site, having already rescued 14 individuals. “Sadly, eight people, including six adults and two children, have been confirmed dead so far. Rescue operations continue,” the Kampala Capital City Authority posted on its X account.
Kiteezi landfill, Kampala’s only garbage dump for decades, has grown into a massive hill, with residents voicing concerns about hazardous waste contaminating the environment and endangering lives.
Images from NTV Uganda showed people walking on the landfill, which had collapsed onto a house, while UBC Uganda captured an excavator digging through the debris.
Recent heavy rains in Uganda have led to flooding and landslides across the country, with the landfill collapse marking the first reported fatalities.
