Tragedy struck early at the Dangwaro Flyover along the Kano-Zaria Road in Northwest Nigeria, as a fatal road crash claimed the lives of 25 people and left 53 others injured. The RS1.2 Kano Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident which occurred around 3:30 a.m.
The accident involved a trailer (IVECO) bearing registration number KMC 311 ZB, which reportedly lost control due to overspeeding. The trailer was carrying 90 individuals, resulting in significant casualties and injuries. Fortunately, 12 people were rescued unhurt from the scene.
CC Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Sector Commander, stated, “Preliminary investigations suggest that the probable cause of the crash was due to overspeeding and loss of control by the driver of the trailer.”
Prompt rescue operations were initiated by the FRSC in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and other emergency response agencies. Items recovered from the scene included six motorcycles, ten mobile phones, animals (rams and goats), maize, and a sum of four thousand naira, all of which are now in police custody.
“All victims of the road traffic crash have been swiftly transported to Murtala Specialist Hospital Kano for urgent medical attention,” noted CRC Abdullahi Labaran, SPEO/PRO FRSC RS1.2 Kano Sector Command.
Following the incident, Sector Commander Ibrahim Abdullahi issued a stern warning against unsafe practices among drivers and motorists.
“Transporting animals, goods, and human beings concurrently is an unsafe practice that not only endangers lives but also contravenes traffic regulations designed to ensure road safety,” he emphasized.
The FRSC urged all road users to strictly adhere to traffic laws and regulations to prevent further tragedies on Nigerian roads.
In a similar development, the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency confirmed the death of two persons and injury to four persons following a head-on collision along the Sagamu/Ijebu-Ode expressway.
This was revealed by the spokesperson of the state-owned traffic outfit, Babatunde Akinbiyi, in a statement in Abeokuta, the state capital, on Monday.
The road crash involved a Howo Truck with no registration number and a Toyota Hiace Bus with BEN 823 ZW.
The cause of the accident was attributed to excessive speed on the part of the bus driver leading to loss of control thereby crashing into the truck.
“Accident victims have been rescued to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, while the bodies of two who lost their lives were deposited at the morgue,” he said.
