Devastating landslide claims eight lives in rain-ravaged Central China

China’s state media reported on June 23 that a landslide in a mountainous area of central China has resulted in the deaths of eight people.

The incident, caused by heavy rain, occurred in a village in Hunan province, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Early on June 23, four houses collapsed, and all eight missing individuals were found without vital signs, as reported by the channel.

In recent months, China has grappled with extreme weather conditions and record-high temperatures.

These occurrences are increasingly linked to climate change, exacerbated by the significant greenhouse gas emissions originating from China, which is the world’s largest emitter.

Meteorological authorities in China issued several red alerts on June 23, the highest level in the country’s four-tier warning system, due to torrential rain.

In Guangdong province, a densely populated manufacturing hub in southern China, heavy downpours triggered floods and landslides, resulting in at least 38 fatalities, as reported by state media.

As torrential rains batter the south, northern China has endured scorching temperatures exceeding 35°C, with Beijing recording temperatures over 40°C last week, according to AFP.
