According to authorities, a fire broke out in a building housing workers in Kuwait, resulting in at least 41 deaths.
The blaze, which occurred early Wednesday morning in the southern Mangaf district, also left dozens injured, as reported by the Health Ministry.
The area is densely populated with foreign laborers, but the nationalities of the casualties have not yet been disclosed.
During a visit to the site, Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad al-Yousuf al-Sabah ordered the arrest of the building’s owner.
“Unfortunately, the greed of real estate owners is what leads to these matters,” stated Sheikh Fahad, who also oversees the interior and defense ministries.
The fire has been contained, and an investigation is underway to determine its cause, authorities confirmed.
“A significant number of workers were housed in the building where the fire erupted. While dozens were rescued, many tragically lost their lives due to smoke inhalation,” stated a senior police commander during an interview with state TV.
“We consistently caution against overcrowding workers in housing facilities,” he remarked, refraining from specifying the type of employment or origin of the workers.
