A tragic incident unfolded in Galkogo village, situated in the Shiroro local government area of Niger state, Northcentral Nigeria, where a mine collapse claimed the life of one individual.
As of Monday evening, 30 individuals, including the Mine Manager identified as Alhaji Ibrahim Ishyaku, remain trapped within the collapsed mine.
Reports from the area indicate that six other individuals were rescued with severe injuries sustained during the mine collapse.
The Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Alhaji Abdullahi Baba Arah, confirmed these details on Tuesday, revealing that the mine in question belonged to “African Minerals and Logistics Limited”.
Arah attributed the mine collapse to the adverse effects of persistent rainfall, which softened the soil, leading to the tragic incident.
He described the challenging conditions faced by rescuers, noting that the mine continued to collapse, forcing them to evacuate the area for their safety.
Despite dispatching an excavator to aid in the rescue operation, Arah highlighted the hazardous nature of the environment due to prevalent banditry activities in the area.
Additionally, NSEMA corroborated reports of ongoing banditry activities in certain communities within the Shiroro and Mashegu local government areas.
Adogo Mallam village was reportedly attacked on Sunday, resulting in the abduction of six individuals.
Another incident occurred on Monday in Tunga Kawo community, located near Erena of Shiroro Local Government, where over 20 individuals were kidnapped, and hundreds of cows were rustled during a bandit raid.
