June Chebet, the daughter of former President Daniel Arap Moi has died at age 60.

The Moi family announced Chabet’s death in a statement issued on Thursday morning, April 11, 2024.

“At this time of grief, we request your prayers and privacy as we the family come to terms with the tragic loss of our sister. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” the family stated.

The family has however not disclosed more details about her death and asked for privacy during the mourning period.

Chebet was the youngest daughter among the former President’s eight children, who included five sons and three daughters, including a set of twins.

June Chebet was adopted by the former president and was raised as part of the family. She attended Nairobi Primary, Kenya High School, and then pursued her university education in Canada, where she became a successful businesswoman.

Among the former President’s other children are Gideon Moi, who carved out a political career in Kenya, Jonathan Toroitich (a former rally driver who passed away in 2019), and Philip Moi (a retired army officer), among others.

Moi married Lena Moi in 1950, the daughter of prominent Eldama Ravine farmer and pioneer Christian Paul Bomet. Lena, a trained teacher, dedicated herself to raising their children as Moi’s political career flourished. However, the couple separated in 1974 and quietly divorced in 1979, with Moi never remarrying. Lena passed away in July 2004 at their Rongai farm.

Chebet was known to be particularly close to her father, who considered her and Gideon as his favorite children. Gideon, following in his father’s footsteps, pursued a political career and became the family spokesperson.
