The sudden collapse of the Iranian currency on Sunday has ignited widespread discontent among the population, occurring as the regime deliberates its response to the alleged Israeli killing of seven senior military officials in Damascus last week.
The Iranian Rial plummeted to a value where one U.S. dollar was worth more than 660,000 Iranian Rials in certain unofficial markets, as reported by the Jerusalem Post.
Despite official statistics from the regime not reflecting the devaluation, the currency experienced a sudden 30% loss in value overnight, according to the report.
A video shared on social media by an Iranian resident illustrated the stark economic decline, showing that while a 50,000 Rial banknote ($1.2) could buy 30 eggs a decade ago, it now only buys a single egg.
Additionally, soccer fans expressed their discontent with the Iranian regime on Sunday by booing and jeering during a minute of silence dedicated to the seven officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) who died last week, as seen in footage shared on social media.
According to Ynet News, fans of the Esteghlal Tehran soccer club defied the regime last October by jeering during a minute of silence held by authorities for the “memory of the Palestinian victims in Gaza”.
In recent days, numerous demonstrations have taken place across Iran, protesting against the worsening economic conditions in the country.
These protests have drawn participants from various sectors, including farmers, pensioners, truck drivers, and medical personnel. Emigration among young Iranian professionals surged by 140% last year, as reported by Iran International.
Additionally, a recent telephone poll conducted by U.S.-based Statis Consulting revealed that nearly half of Iran’s youth aspire to leave the country.
Meanwhile, Iranian state outlets have continued to broadcast threatening messages directed at Israel, which include infographics depicting the Iranian army’s missiles with ranges capable of reaching Israel, verbal threats against Israel by officials, and videos showing rocket barrages aimed at Israel, as detailed by the Jerusalem Post.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian extended his Middle East tour by visiting Damascus, Syria on Monday, following his initial stop in Oman.
According to Iran International, one of the objectives of his tour is to garner support for potential retaliation against Israel.
Amirabdollahian stated that he discussed “the latest regional developments, including the continuation of the Zionists’ hybrid war crimes against Palestinians and the necessity of making preventive decisions.”
Additionally, Iran’s foreign minister is set to engage in discussions with senior Syrian officials regarding various bilateral and regional issues, including the recent developments in Israel and the ongoing Gaza crisis, as reported by the Iranian state outlet Tasnim.
