On Wednesday, transportation in Turkana County came to a halt due to intense rainfall. Many roads near seasonal rivers throughout the county were impassable due to the significant water flow.
Notably, Nakiria in Kalokol and River Kataboi in Turkana North overflowed, exacerbating the situation.
The heavy rains made places like Kalimapus and Loropio unreachable.
Chegem Simon, a World Vision Enumerator traveling from Lodwar to Todonyang on Wednesday morning, shared that they had to turn back to Lodwar because River Nakiria had become impassable.
“We’ve been stranded here for a while, and we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel our planned activities in Todonyang, Turkana North.
“We’ll have to reschedule for a later date due to the disruptions caused by the floods,” he explained.
Motorists and passengers were forced to wait for hours as they dealt with flooded roads and water levels that needed to subside before they could continue with their activities.
Passengers traveling along the Lodwar-Kalokol route were stranded due to flooding at River Kataboi in Turkana North.
Francis Muinda, the county’s meteorological director, has stated that several wards in Turkana County will receive moderate to very heavy rainfall ranging from 10-140mm over the next two weeks.
Residents are advised to be vigilant for potential floods and strong winds.
“Muinda cautioned, ‘Flood waters may emerge even in areas with minimal rainfall, particularly downstream.
“Strong winds could lead to roof damage, tree uprooting and structural harm.”
According to forecasts, Turkana County is anticipated to encounter morning rainfall, along with afternoon showers and thunderstorms in various locations throughout the forecast period.
