Tragically, authorities in western Germany confirmed on Monday that two adults and a child perished in a house fire.
The fire, originating on the first floor of a four-story house in Solingen during the early hours of the day, rapidly spiralled out of control, as reported by a spokesperson from the fire department to public broadcaster WDR.
Amidst the chaos, 21 individuals were rescued, with nine requiring hospitalisation for serious injuries, including two in critical condition.
Additionally, several others received immediate treatment on-site for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.
Despite ongoing efforts, firefighters are cautiously continuing the search for a missing child, as concerns persist over potential structural collapse of the building.
According to local media reports, the fire rapidly consumed the wooden stairs of the old building, leaving occupants on the upper floors stranded.
Faced with imminent danger, some individuals made the harrowing decision to leap from windows in a bid to escape the blaze.
As of now, the cause of the fire remains undetermined. Authorities, in coordination with other state agencies, have launched an investigation to unravel the events leading to this devastating tragedy.
Solingen’s mayor, Tim Kurzbach, arrived at the scene and addressed reporters, praising the efforts of firefighters and emergency services who worked tirelessly to rescue the victims.
“I extend my prayers for the deceased and wish for the swift recovery of all those injured,” he said, further announcing his directive to lower flags to half-staff on the city hall building as a mark of respect.
“I would ask you to wait and see what the further investigations reveal. In my view, everyone should refrain from making speculations at such a moment. The police and the public prosecutor’s office are doing everything that needs to be done,” he stated.
