Three teacher unions in Ghana, namely the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT-Gh), have commenced a nationwide strike as of today, March 20.
The reason behind this industrial action is the perceived delay in addressing their conditions of service by the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service.
They emphasise the non-completion of negotiations for a new collective agreement, which they expected to conclude by February 29, 2024.
Part of the statement reads, “Hence, the new Collective Agreement remains un-negotiated.
We highlighted this concern in our letter to the Director General of GES, dated February 29th, 2024, and also notified the National Labour Commission. As we convene here today, the matter remains unresolved.”
The unions further pointed out that they have alerted the Director General of GES to the absence of a functional scheme of service for teachers within the Ghana Education Service.
They argued that a well-defined and suitable scheme would adequately address all the needs and demands within the teaching profession.
Furthermore, the unions emphasised the government and the GES’s inability to complete the distribution of laptops to all teachers.
