Nigerian troops make progress amid fight against insurgency, kills 10 terrorists, arrest bandit kingpin

The Nigerian army troops have neutralised 10 terrorists and arrested a bandit kingpin in clearance operations at bandit enclaves in the northwest region of the country.

Capt. Yagata Ibrahim, the Information Officer, Joint Task Force, Operation Hadarin Daji, made this known in a statement on Saturday in Gusau, Zamfara State capital.

According to him, the troops recorded tremendous successes in coordinated clearance operations in the affected states.

The statement partly reads: “In a recent clearance operation conducted on Jan. 26, the troops cleared and destroyed terrorists’ enclaves at Pada, Matso-Matso, and Yurlumu villages in Batsari Local Government Area of Katsina State.

“During the operation, seven terrorists were neutralised while others escaped with severe gunshot wounds.

“On the same day, OPHD troops in Zamfara, on fighting patrol, neutralised two terrorists at Getso and Ubaka villages under Maru LGA.

“The troops recovered one AK47 rifle, one magazine, 7.62mm special ammunition, and two motorcycles.”

Meanwhile, the troops arrested Usman Abubakar, known as Harinde, a notorious bandit leader in Zamfara.

The arrest, executed based on intelligence, targeted a figure responsible for terrorizing various areas, including Shinkafi and Zurmi LGAs, along with other villages in Sokoto state.

Additionally, troops acted on credible information about a group of gunrunners planning to smuggle weapons into the state, resulting in the arrest of three suspects in Shinkafi.

The operation yielded a recovery of N2.5 million, a Volkswagen wagon car, and three mobile phones. In a separate joint operation with the Department of State Security Service (DSS), a terrorist collaborator named Ibrahim Atiku was apprehended in Amawara village, Danmusa LGA, Katsina State.

The suspects are currently undergoing preliminary investigations before being handed over to appropriate security agencies for further actions.
