No fewer than 30 villagers were killed as bandits attacked Kwahaslalek village, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, despite a 24-hour curfew imposed on the council.
The attack was carried out around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 23, 2024.
The victims, mostly women and children, were said to have sought refuge in the house of a community leader in Mangu town following earlier unrest, before the gunmen surrounded them and carried out the attack, resulting in the tragic deaths of all those present.
Mark Haruna, a community leader, recounted the incident, revealing that the turmoil in Sabon Gari and Mangu town served as a distraction while the assailants targeted villages. Kwahaslalek village, located behind the NYSC camp, was attacked around 12:30 a.m., claiming the lives of over 25 people, mostly women and children.
Joseph Gwankat, Chairman of Mwaghavul Development Association, confirmed the incident, expressing dismay at the callous act.
He criticized the lack of security presence to protect the villagers and condemned the ongoing attacks on innocent people.
The state police command’s spokesman, Alabo Alfred, stated that he had not yet received a report on the incident and assured that they would investigate upon confirmation.
The incident happened barely 24 hours after the Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, declared a 24-hour curfew on the Mangu LGA.
He said the decision followed the deteriorating security situation in the area after unrest left several houses, including churches and mosques, burnt down.
The state is yet to recover from the Christmas Eve attacks on communities in three local government areas of the state.
