Newcastle United thrashed Chelsea 4-1 in a Premier League clash on Saturday, November 25, 2023.
The Blues, after rescuing a point in a pulsating draw against reigning Premier League Champions Manchester City, were hoping they had turned the corner on a poor start to the season but were returned to reality with a humiliating 4-1 loss to Newcastle at St. James’ Park.
Alexander Isak had opened the scoring for the hosts in the 13th minute before Raheem Sterling equalised soon after.
Newcastle’s Jamaal Lascelles and Joelinton then fired quick goals in the hour mark to put their side in control of the game.
The Blues were reduced to 10 men in 73 minutes when Reece James was shown a second yellow card.
Chelsea struggled and could not get back into the game as they fell further behind, conceding a late goal to Gordon in the 83 minutes, losing ground in their Premier League race.
The defeat to Newcastle made it the fifth time Chelsea lost all three points to their opponent in the ongoing season.
Earlier, Manchester City, leading the table, faced a draw against Liverpool in their home game at the Etihad Stadium. The match ended 1-1, with goals from Erling Haaland and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The draw put an end to the 23-match winning run for City at the Etihad. But Pep Guardiola’s team maintains their top spot in the Premier League, with Liverpool close behind.
However, Arsenal has the chance to take the lead if they win against Brentford later in the day.
In other Premier League matches, West Ham came from behind to win 2-1 against Burnley, Luton beat Crystal Palace 2-1, Bournemouth triumphed over Sheffield United 3-1, and Brighton secured a 3-2 victory against Nottingham Forest.
