A 36-year-old labourer, Terkaa Akishi has bagged 15 months jail term for stealing two Qurans and a cell phone from a Mosque in the Asokoro area of Abuja, the capital of Nigeria.
Akishi was sentenced by a Grade 1 Area Court sitting at Lugbe, Abuja, on Tuesday after being charged with trespass and theft.
The Judge, Malam Aliyu Kagarko in his ruling, however, gave him an option of N40,000 fine.
During the court proceedings, Prosecutor Mr. Emeka Ezeganya stated that the case was initially reported at the Asokoro Police Station by Mr. Isah Balikisu of the Guards Brigade, Nigeria Army, Asokoro, Abuja, on March 14.
Ezeganya explained that the convict unlawfully entered a mosque in the area and stole a cell phone along with two Qurans.
Although the exact value of the stolen items was yet to be determined, they were subsequently recovered from Akishi during the police investigation.
The prosecutor emphasized that these actions violated Sections 348 and 287 of the Penal Code.
