Officials reported on Sunday that at least 30 people were killed and 145 others injured in armed clashes between two tribes fighting over a piece of land in Pakistan’s volatile tribal district in the northwest.

Heavy clashes broke out five days ago in Boshera village, Upper Kurram district, a region with a history of tribal disputes, religious group tensions, sectarian violence, and militant assaults, officials reported.

Police stated that five days of tribal clashes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kurram district, near the Afghan border, have led to 30 deaths and 145 injuries.

With the assistance of tribal elders, military leaders, police, and district administration officials, a truce was brokered between Shia and Sunni tribes in the Boshera, Malikhel, and Dandar areas, police announced.

Despite the truce, gunfire persists in other parts of the district. An official stated that efforts are ongoing to secure a ceasefire in the remaining areas as well.

Law enforcement has taken control of the trenches previously occupied by the tribal fighters.

The conflict between the two tribes began over a land dispute four days ago and quickly escalated to other regions, including Peewar, Tangi, Balishkhel, Khaar Kalay, Maqbal, Kunj Alizai, Para Chamkani, and Karman.

Residents in the area reported that the warring tribes were using advanced weaponry, such as mortar shells and rocket launchers, against one another.

They also mentioned that Parachinar and Sadda, the primary cities in the Kurram tribal district, were being targeted with mortar and rocket fire.

An official indicated that there were at least four rounds of assaults during last night’s firefight, resulting in additional casualties.

Markets and educational institutions remained closed, while traffic on main roads was suspended throughout the day.

Authorities reported that large contingents of police and security forces have been stationed in the affected regions.
