A pro-democracy activist group reported on Saturday that 22 people were killed when Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked the city of al-Fashir. This incident marks the highest death toll after weeks of deadlock on that front in the country’s civil war.
According to a Facebook post by the al-Fashir Resistance Committees, the RSF fired artillery at markets, hospitals, and residential areas, and used a drone to strike a hospital.
The city represents the national army’s last remaining stronghold in the Darfur region and serves as a key battleground in the ongoing conflict with the RSF.
This clash has contributed to Sudan’s escalation into the most severe humanitarian crisis worldwide, with widespread displacement and suffering.
Twenty-two bodies have been reported, with expectations that the number of casualties will increase, according to the activist group.
The RSF has not yet reacted, although it has earlier denied targeting civilian areas with shelling.
The United Nations has reported that over 300,000 people have been displaced from their homes in al-Fashir due to the conflict that erupted in April.
The fighting has caused widespread displacement, with many fleeing to neighboring areas and facing severe humanitarian challenges.
