By Gabriel Oshokha

A Senior Secondary School (SSS2) student, Mwafor Emmanuel, has drowned in a river at Owena, the Ondo East Local Government Area of the state.

Emmanuel who was said to be 19 as of the time of the incident, was a student of Owena Community Grammar School.

According to a source, the deceased had gone alone to the river behind the school to swim after the end of the school day.

The source added that the deceased school uniform and sandals were found on the banks of the river.

One of the teachers of the school who spoke to newsmen on condition of anonymity, said, “The incident happened after school hours. Other students had gone to their houses when the boy decided to go and swim alone. He must have drowned when he went deeper inside the river.

“Unfortunately, if other students were with him when the incident occurred, they would have raised the alarm and he may have been rescued, but he went to the river alone to swim.”

Our findings revealed that police detectives had deposited the corpse of the deceased at the state’s General Hospital in Ondo town.

The state police spokesperson, Funmi Odunlami, who confirmed the incident, described the death of Emmanuel as unfortunate.
