Nigerian troops from the Joint Task Force Northwest have successfully eliminated notorious bandit leader Kachallah Buzu and several of his fighters in Zamfara State.

The operation occurred on the night of September 12, 2024, in Mayanchi village, following an ambush laid by the military based on intelligence reports about the terrorists’ movements.

According to counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, the ambush was highly effective, resulting in the deaths of many bandits, including their leader, Buzu.

The troops also seized 30 motorcycles and a large cache of weapons, significantly weakening the group’s operational capabilities.

“This success marks a major victory in the ongoing fight against banditry in the Northwest region,” Makama stated.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) had declared Halilu Buzu, a native of Niger, wanted in May 2024 for his role in coordinating terrorist attacks on both military and civilian targets.

Buzu was notorious for cattle rustling, illegal gold mining, and arms trafficking.

He was also linked to the massacre of 19 villagers in Farar Kasa, Zamfara State, and was known to evade capture by seeking refuge in Niger when under pressure from Nigerian forces.
