Google (GOOGL) is set to join the foldable smartphone market and compete head-on with Samsung, which has been the leader in this segment for the past few years.
The tech giant released an 8-second teaser video of its first foldable phone called the Pixel Fold, which is set to be revealed during Google’s I/O event on May 10.
The Pixel Fold appears to have a similar overall design as its non-folding counterpart. The phone folds inward similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series, which together with the Galaxy Z Flip has dominated the foldable smartphone market.
With Google’s entry, the foldable market will have another major player, especially since the tech company has increased its investment in its smartphone hardware division after launching the Pixel 6 in October 2021. The Pixel Fold will likely have a starting price of over $1,700, which will make it the most expensive phone in Google’s portfolio. It will be in the same price range as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4, which costs $1,799. The specifications of Google’s folding device are still unknown, but it is expected to run on Google’s Tensor G2 chip, the same one that powers the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro phones that came out in Q4 2022. Google will also introduce a tablet at its May 10 event, completing its ecosystem of devices that also includes the Pixel Watch and Pixel Buds.
